The day began like any other. The clock was set to exactly 6:45 AM, to allow Kaori to wake up in peace before eating his breakfast, mainly consisting of bread and milk. He never seemed to get tired of it, nor had he any intentions of changing the ritual. Around 7:25 AM he would put his coat on, grab his suitcase and exit his house. He never drove to work, as he lived close to his workplace.
The street were always filled with the same people, starting their day with similar rituals as his. There was the bald old man Chiba in the building over the street, who always went out on his daily walk with his award-winning dog the moment Kaori locked his door. He always managed to find some poor soul which he could boast to about his beautiful breed.
There was also the fat lady Kajiyama who always seemed to be late. Kaori looked at his watch. She would rush out of her house any second now. And sure as a clockwerk the door opened, revealing the large woman. As always she ran across the street to the direction of her workplace, which was located at the other side of the town. She would have to hurry to the bus, or she wouldn't make it in time. But she always did manage to get there just before the bus stopped.
Kaori sighed and continued his stroll. Everything went exactly as it used to. While it might've been the dream for some people, for Kaori it was simply boring. He was slowly losing his sanity. He craved for something to happen, even if he would have to provide it himself. He allowed himself a smirk as he took a turn he didn't use to. He never took that way because of a simple reason. It went away from his destination. Instead it led him to the centrum of the city. What he was going to do here was as much a mystery to him as why he had turned in the first place.
He was walking down a steep hill, along a street that was larger than the one he usually walked on. He didn't remember any of the faces he passed, and they looked at him queerly, as if he'd disturbed their morning rituals. Maybe he had. Maybe he had reacted the same way if someone who didn't use to walk on his street in the morning suddenly did. Maybe he had been confused if the lady Kajiyama would be done in time one day, or if the old man Chiba suddenly decided to ignore his dogs needs.
But that wasn't the case. No, instead of being chained to the same ritual that repeated over and over, he had broken free of the spiral that had held him for all these years. He didn't do what he always did, he acted on impulse instead of habit. And he loved every part of it.
He reached the park near the centrum, and decided to enter it. He walked along the dirt path, obvserving the bushes and trees that had been placed alongside it. He had never obverved the details of the scenery as he did now. He had always been too focused on the way ahead of him to notice what lay around him. The nature had a subtle beauty which had never appealed to him before. He saw a duck pond and went up towards it. After quickly checking to see if the coast was clear he climbed over the fence and splashed into the water. The terrified ducks scattered, making an awful lot of noise. It didn't matter to Kaori however. He lay down in the middle of the pond and started floating on his back. He just lay there, looking up at the sky.
Moments later, or it could be hours, he wouldn't know, his phone called. Somehow it had survived the water. It was playing the same tune he had used his whole life, and he hated it. He picked up the phone from his pocket and held it to his ear, grunting something inaudible.
"Tatsuya? Where are you? You're several hours late for work, this is unacceptable!" A voice yelled at him. He quickly recalled that it was the voice of his boss. His boss, who let him do the same paperwork day out and day in. He hung up without even answering and went back to his enjoyment. He didn't care what happened at his work, he didn't care what happened in the future. The only thing he cared about was that he was living his life fully, without any restraints at all.
