Backstory: For the past 1500 years several large kingdoms have dominated the Toran plains of Altrana. Of these empires two have kept a large level of hegemony over the entire area. These two were the kingdoms of Ulseth and Fragonara.
The Kingdom of Fragonara is situated on especially fertile land with large grassy plains and forests. With several large rivers to feed the cities and the farmland, Fraganora has been primarily an agricultural based empire. However, deep within the forests of the empire live several races besides the humans. Many of these races are far older than humankind itself and are masters of the spiritual arts and magic. Over the past 1000 years they have made peace with the citizens of Fragonara and have brought their knowledge and powers to the humans. As such Fraganora has over time become the worldwide center of magic learning with many of the most powerful sorcerers in the world.
A few miles away in the shadow of a large mountain range is the Kingdom of Ulseth. While Fragonara was blessed with the bounties of food and wood, Ulseth has always focused on the bounty that lies within the mountains and under the soil. The land it is built on has been blessed with various gems, minerals, and metals. This has led to it focus primarily on mining and most recently industry. With the discovery of vast supplies of oil and coal under the soil the industrial might of the kingdom has been expanding by leaps and bounds each year. It has now surpassed all of its neighbors in technological discoveries.
Since both kingdoms had their own specific ways of life for centuries they remained as allies. They quarreled sometimes but mainly worked together to defend the plains from foreign invaders. However, all of this changed when the scientists found a way to start creating weapons and technologies that ran off of magical power. With a new change in leaders at the same time in Fragonara, the Fragonaran military quickly became worried about the new threat the Kingdom of Ulseth could become. While they had been able to balance out Ulseth's technological might with their great magical prowess, they feared what would happen if the two were combined. The new king finally decided that the best course of action would be to stomp out the threat before it became too large to handle. He quickly made alliances with several of the other kingdoms before declaring war on Ulseth and its chief ally the kingdom of Afrania.
Unprepared for a sudden war Afrania was quickly overrun by the combined forces of the kingdoms cutting Ulseth off from some of its core resource pathways. While Ulseth was able to hold back the other kingdoms at first, over time its forces began to be pushed back to the center of the kingdom. With all of its pleas for a ceasefire ignored, the council of Elders in Ulseth finally decided to deploy some prototype magitech weapons. While these managed to even the forces of the two sides, in the final battle the head sorceror of Fraganora managed to destroy the core of some of the magitech weapons. However, instead of just rendering them unusable, they exploded releasing vast quantities of magical energies that tore the battlefield asunder. Mixing with the magical energies left over from all the spells used by both sides, a powerful magical storm devastated the area killing most of the soldiers and making the entire area a vast wasteland. As the storm grew and spread it became a barrier between the two kingdoms forcing the war to a halt. With Ulseth mostly cut off from the rest of the world besides a small protected passageway to the conquered Afrania, Fragonara has declared itself the dominant power in the area waiting only for Ulseth to waste away trapped by the mountains that used to protect it.
The year is 12 M.E. (Magic Era) and just as the King of Fragonara predicted, Ulseth has started to run out of resources due to its forced isolation. However, the council of Ulseth has found a way around this problem. An old mine system that leads through the mountains between Afrania and Ulseth could be extended to completely connect the two kingdoms and allow trading and forces to move between the kingdoms without the knowledge of the Fragonaran viceroys. The council has now sent some of its best special agents into Afrania to complete this task.
You are these special agents.

Backstory: Due to the kingdom of Ulseth's technological superiority, they have rarely focused on studying the arcane arts. However, with the war against Fragonara becoming dangerous, they tried to find anyone who had at least some magical power or knowledge to help them plan how to fight against the other magic users. A immigrant from Fragonara 20 years previously, Jackson quickly registered to help with his knowledge. He was quickly assigned as one of the three top sorcerors in the kingdom due to his knowledge and served well during the war. He was the first to be called upon to help in the mission to complete the mine passageway due to his skills and the fact that he would blend in well with the other magic users in Afrania.
While a skilled magician in his own right, Jackson suffers from the fact that outside of magic he isn't that smart. He has always been an act first, think second type of person and has a very short memory span. This has hindered him in his magical practices because while he would be able to control high-level spells, he can rarely remember the incantations or ingredients necessary to perform them. He usually uses a large wooded staff to help out his magic and in case someone gets too close and he has to fight them. He also is a pretty fast runner as he has learned that he needs to be able to get out of the way when fighting melee users.
